September 2nd, 2005 - Howdy, gang! Looks like we've had a bit of rain down in the Gulf, eh? Well I'll tell ya what: if you click on the Red Cross link on our main page, follow through and make a donation - whether it be 25 cents or 25 dollars, shoot me an e-mail and I'll send you an autographed copy of the San Diego Comic Con Exclusive book we were selling in July. I'm taking your word for it, folks! I don't need proof; if you tell me you made a donation, then let it be on your conscience if you didn't! :)
Thanks in advance for lending your fellow man a helping hand! And don't forget to include your address in your e-mail! This offer is good until Friday, September 9th!
June 29th, 2005 - Howdy, folks! Long time no speak! Sorry about being so incommunicado as of late. Work has been a frenzied blur these past few months but my Boss is out of town for the next couple of weeks which means I get a brief respite. First order of business: get the new news out to the PIRATE COVE fans!
The San Diego Comic Con is rapidly approaching (July 14-17, see www.comic-con.org for more details) which means I should probably tell you that both Webmaster John and I will be over in the Small Press Pavilion Table M-1 starting first thing the morning of the 14th! That's right: Webmaster John is flying in from Japan JUST to see YOU!
We'll have free giveaway comics for PIRATE COVE readers featuring - God help me - an all-new story! We'll be selling them to the general public for $1 each, but if you present us with the coupon below, it'll be yours FREE! So get printin'!
By the way - have I happened to mention I'm a huge fan of the Fantastic Four? See you in a few weeks!
March 29th, 2005 - I'm back from Jury Duty and you'll be happy to know we FRIED THE BASTARD! HAH! Well... no. Not really. I never even made it to a jury. I got to sit around and read. Nothing to this Jury Duty thing, really...
But you're here to read about PIRATE COVE NEWS and PIRATE COVE NEWS is what I shall give you! APE: On April 9th and 10th, the PIRATE COVE Crew will be at the Alternative Press Expo in San Francisco, Table 511. If you're in the neighborhood, stop on by and say Hi! ARCHIVES UPDATES: The Jury Duty Week filler comic, Road Trip, has been moved to the Archives section. You can find it at the bottom of the page. MIRRORVERSE: For the past few weeks, MirrorVerse has been back on track, updating at least once a week. If you haven't clicked over there in awhile, now's as good a time as any! I'm even doing guest artwork for a few strips! RANDOM STUFF: Another new section to be added to the Archives will be 'Random Stuff.' This section will include sketches and artwork created for conventions, promotions, etc. And if any of you readers want to send it some PIRATE COVE-related artwork of your own, I'd be happy to display it! Random Stuff should be online sometime in April.
That about covers it for this installment of Pirate Cove News. Tune in tomorrow when you'll hear Webmaster John say... "I can't find any clothing that fits me in this damn country!!!"
February 9th, 2005 - Just a couple of quick updates before they drag me kicking and screaming back to my padded room... BEFORE THE COVE has been updated with Issue Zero and Issue Nine. Issues Four and Five are next on tap but I have to locate the original art for them first (I never said I was an ORGANIZED maniac.)
Convention-wise, APE cashed my check so I can only assume that means we will be going back to the Alternative Press Expo in San Francisco this year! The show runs for two days in April: the 9th and 10th. Go to www.comic-con.org for more information!
December 22nd, 2004 - And here we are, at the end of another year! I can only hope you've had as much fun with the strip this year as I have (especially throughout the course of this past month! The chase has been a nightmare to draw, but a blast to see realized!) I really hoped I would have this storyline wrapped up before the Holiday Hiatus, but it appears that will not be the case. Fear Not! I won't leave you on too much of a cliffhanger (no pun intended.) So we'll wrap up "Caws & Effect" early next year, then delve right into a little tale I like to call "Crass Reunion." If you haven't checked out the Before The Cove section yet, might I suggest you do so during my vacation week. There are a few characters in there you might wanna get introduced to. :)
Speaking of which, yes, I do intend to add some more of the 'ol college comics to Before The Cove very soon. Full-time-paying-job has been extremely unpleasant as of late and I'm lucky to have found the time to do the daily strips. Look for AT LEAST one new issue of Before The Cove to be posted in January!
Lastly, before I go, I wanted to mention that, despite popular opinion, Robert "Chachi" Gomez IS alive & well and planning on returning to the MirrorVerse as soon as he can! If I get any news on this, I will be sure to let y'all know ASAP!
Allrighty, then! That about covers it! Pirate Cove's last strip for the year will be on Sunday, December 26th and we will return to duty on Monday, January 3rd, 2005! In the meantime, I wish you all a happy and healthy holiday season no matter what religion (or lack thereof) you practice! Hmmm... I wonder if I could claim Pirate Cove as a religion on my taxes this year...? "Coveism." Churches get some serious tax breaks, don't they?
October 14th, 2004 - It appears congratulations are in order! Louis Grant (after whom the Pirate Cove character 'Louis' was named) and his longtime girlfriend, Amy Dipalma, have gotten engaged! I'd hate to make the obvious 'Amy Grant' / 'Louis Dipalma' jokes, so I'll just let that lie. Instead, BEST WISHES, kids! I think this calls for the return of someone who's been in the MirrorVerse for a while... muh ha ha ha ha!!!
September 29th, 2004 - Has this been a hectic past few months or WHAT?? Maybe I've just been reading the newspaper more often but it really seems like there isn't a single corner of the World where things aren't happening! Perhaps that would account for the revolving storylines as of late: mirroring the upsidedown state of affairs that is my life... so, yeah. Things have been busy, but I wanted to post a News Report on a couple of topics:
A) To those of you who wrote, asking "where can I get one of those cool jack-o-lantern pumpkin shirts?" I hate to tell you this, but Target, the place I've seen them at for the past 8 years doesn't seem to be carrying them this year! Oh, the horror! Here I was, telling y'all to go to Target around Halloween... and the dang things are nowhere to be found! I swear, they carried them every Halloween for the past 8 years! Grrrrr!
B) LAST CHANCE OFFER: If you wanted a free copy of the Comic Con 2004 giveaway, "Some People'll Publish ANYTHING," you've only got about 2 weeks left to do so! Send an e-mail to PirateCoveComic@aol.com with your name and address & we'll drop one in the mail ASAP!
OK, I gotta get back to the day job. Take care & I'll try to update the News Section a little more often in the future!
July 15th, 2004 - HowdyHowdyHowdy! In just under a week, the PIRATE COVE crew will be heading down to San Diego, CA for Comic Con 2004! So if you happen to be in the neighborhood between July 22nd and 25th, pop on by and say hello! PIRATE COVE will be ensconded in the Small Press Area, table M-1 (subject to change, check your Comic Con directory.)
While you're there, pick up some PIRATE COVE magnets and our newest giveaway comic entitled "Some People'll Publish ANYTHING!" (See below)
And for the first time ever, we've included an all-new 8-page story in the giveaway comic! Yep! 28 panels of never-before-seen Piratey goodness!
Lastly, for those of you who want to read the new story but cannot attend Comic Con, fear not! We wouldn't leave ya hanging in the wind like that! You have two choices: A) Just drop an e-mail to PirateCoveComic@aol.com with your mailing address and we'll stick a copy in the mail to you once Comic Con is over, or B) Wait for my next vacation when I will probably colorize the story and use it as filler. (NOTE: I am only putting 100 or so copies of "Some People'll Publish ANYTHING!" aside so it's first come, first serve! This offer is good until October 13th, 2004 or when I run out of books. Whichever comes first.)
OK, that about covers it! Off we go into the wild bloo yonder and I hope to see you there!
February 23rd, 2004 - Other than Randy's altercation with a bobcat on the way to San Francisco, APE went just swimmingly! Webmaster John flew in from Colorado for the event and we found a GREAT sushi restaurant (Midori Mushi) right outside our hotel door! I've never seen anyone use a blowtorch when preparing fish before...
Once again, it was great to see the fans in person (Andrew? Are you stalking us?) and special thanks to the new reader who brought us cookies! All three of us managed to forget to bring a camera to the event, but luckilly, these images surfaced on the web:
Hey - gotta draw in those readers somehow, eh?
February 20th, 2004 - Howdy, folks! Seeing as how it's the Year Of The Monkey, we've decided to go APE!
That's right! On February 21st and 22nd, you can find Pirate Cove at the Alternative Press Expo in San Francisco, CA. We're at table 536 and will be giving out Pirate Cove magnets (including three new ones of Louis, the Ranger, and Chevre) as well as new Pirate Cove mini comics featuring the Bigfoot storyline from last year! So if you're in the neighborhood, swing on by! And if not, hop a flight. With all the terror alerts, airfare should be cheap (I kid! I kid!)
In other news, you'll soon be able to double your dose of Pirate Cove at least three times a week as Robert Gomez (the colorist from Episode XIV) will begin his own Pirate Cove spinoff: Mirrorverse! If you can't wait to find out what Louis is up to in the mirror dimension, you're not alone! I'm looking forward to finding out what's in store for him myself! Mirrorverse will be linked under our daily strip for your alternate universe perusal shortly!
Viva San Francisco!
September 12th, 2003 - So anyway... September 12th, 2003: Robert's recolorings of the Current Storyline have begun! Since we're just about ready to roll into the final weeks of Episode XIV, why not take a moment to re-read it from the beginning and enjoy the brand-spankin new look? I'll try to get the recolorings posted as fast as Robert gets 'em to me! Hope you like it!
Meanwhile, what would y'all think about another Convention Appearance? It's not official yet, but you might want to pencil February 21st & 22nd, 2004 into your calander because that's the weekend of APE: the Alternative Press Expo in San Francisco, CA! Details to follow soon!
Viva San Francisco!
September 11th, 2003 - And here we are, entering Year Three.
There's so much I want to say... so many people I want to thank... I just can't say enough good things about them... so I won't.
Meanwhile, the strips... they're gonna be a'changing! That's right! Starting soon (REAL SOON) San Diego-based artist Robert Gomez will be taking on colorist's duties, giving Pirate Cove one hell of a brand new shine! He'll be starting with the Archived Strips in this Current Storyline so be sure to watch this space for more info!!!
Welcome aboard, Robert!
In other news, the Message Board hasn't exactly been on fire since we first started it, so it's probably gonna go bye-bye in a couple weeks. Maybe we'll give it another go next year but for now I felt the money it would cost to keep it up & running was better off used to renew the Pirate Cove web URL.
We're now renewed through 2005. Looks like you're gonna be stuck with us for at least another two years!
Viva Las Vegas!!
July 21st, 2003 - We came. We saw. We gave out comics!!! COMICON 2003 Report
Viva San Diego!!!
July 1st, 2003 - A couple of quick bits for ya today:
1) In case you didn't see the post on the Message Board, Comic Con has come through with additional Small Press Space. That means we WILL INDEED be attending the Con from July 17th - 20th, 2003. Come hunt us down! We'll be giving away Pirate Cove magnets and mini-comics, doing free sketches, and greeting readers with open arms (unless YOU'VE got open SORES. Then we'll just wave from a distance.) And speaking of the Message Board...
B) It's been getting a little bit of use, so we've extended our contract with EZ Board through October. Just so you know, you DO NOT need to be a registered EZ Board user to post there. If you don't want to register, you can reply to a topic or start a new one, by leaving the password section blank.
That's all for now, hope to see you at Comic Con in a few days!!
June 13th, 2003 - Happy Friday The 13th, everyone! Remember back nearly a year ago when I said we were going to have a Pirate Cove Message Board? Then failed to provide one? Well, one of your fellow readers got off his butt and did it for us! A big thank you goes out to Randy Carter! You can find the Board at http://pub31.ezboard.com/bpiratecove
In other news, plans to colorize the older strips hit the skids when several readers pointed out that if we DID colorize them, it would make the first CCC storyline null & void... not to mention the readers who wrote seem to PREFER them in their original form. Well, folks - unlike George Lucas, I LISTEN to my readers so, while I may yet re-scan and re-size them, they will indeed remain in glorious black & white greyscale!
Lastly, I received a phone call yesterday from the San Diego Comic Con people... informing me that despite my applying for a table on time, despite their confirming I had a table reserved, and despite they have my money, they will NOT have a table for PIRATE COVE at this year's convention. Needless to say, I flipped on them. But not all is lost yet! After a few frantic phone calls and much waiting on hold, I was informed that they are considering adding Small Press Tables to the West side of the hall.
So keep your fingers crossed and I'll let y'all know what's happening as soon as I do!
Viva Las Vegas!
February 17th, 2003 - I got an e-mail the other day, asking if I was planning on incorporating the impending war into
No. I am not.
Some of you may recall how PIRATE COVE started going daily as of September 12th, 2001. This was not an accident. The fact there was a strip on September 10th, 2001 was an accident. It was a fluke. A joke I sent to a friend. Then crisis struck the following day and the World became a far less joyous place.
Well, if there's one thing I've taken away from my years of listening to performer Jimmy Buffett, it's this quote which he's paraphrased from Lord Richard Buckley on numerous occasions: Humor is the absence of terror. And considering I'm no soldier, no strategist, no weapons designer, or anything else the Goverment could really make use of in protecting the Citizens of the United States, I've chosen to do my part by providing some daily humor to anyone who cares to view it.
PIRATE COVE is escapism. Compared to many things in life, it is silly, generally pointless, and occasionally downright stupid. But if it can make you forget about terror alerts, failing economy, and potential wars, then the last thing it can be called is worthless.
It's been a pleasure entertaining y'all for the past 520 days (give or take a few days here and there) and I hope I can continue to do the same for at least another 520!
Viva Las Vegas!
January 6th, 2002 - As Pirate Cove enters its third year (dear God... has it been that long??) Joe and Webmaster John are working to bring everything back up to snuff and running smoothly, starting with the Archives. With any luck, they should all be back up and running by now, setting the stage for something we're calling OPERATION: TED TURNER. Over the course of the next few months, we're going to be re-scanning all the original strips at a better resolution and COLORIZE all the old black & whites! Watch this space for more info as it becomes available! And let's be careful out there! Happy New Year, All!
October 28th, 2002 - As you may have noticed, we are beginning to make the past year's archives available Episode by Episode. Unlike our previous incarnation, you can now advance from strip to strip by clicking 'Next' or 'Previous.' If you experience any problems, please drop us a line so we can beat it to a bloody pulp. Hope you're enjoying what you see as Joe and Webmaster John continue to strive for comic excellence. As seen below.
September 12th, 2002 - Welcome to the brand new Pirate Cove 2.0! We'll be working on the site diligently (which for us means half-assed) in an attempt to get everything up and running ASAP!
New features we are working on include Character Bios for new readers, a Frequently Asked Questions section, and a Message Board so you can converse with other Pirate Cove fans! We are also splitting up the archived strips into 'Episodes' to avoid having a 2 mile long list of strips.
Anyway, back to the grindstone goes I! Enjoy!
August 5th, 2002 - Pirate Cove goes to Comic Con 2002. Check us out!!
